Friends
Philip and Susan Dodds of beautiful Pleasant Plains Farm deserve extra special
mention here. They most graciously provided dock and shop space for Adventure during
her long 3 year refit, and a wonderful cottage for us to live in in the interim period
between selling our house and sailing away on our first voyage. I can truly say that all
of it wouldn't have been possible without them!
I had long set aside my guitar, and was inspired to pick it up again in numerous
wonderful musical afternoons and evenings with them, the Irish Potato Famine,
Seamus Kennedy and other wonderful musicians.
Thank you, Philip and Susan, from the bottom of our hearts!
Fred Hickman
An old near and dear friend and fellow craftsman, Fred and I worked together in our
shop at Homeport Farm for many years, Fred rebuilding pianos while I made harpsichords. A
first class craftsman, you can visit his website if you need your piano
rebuilt or repaired in the Annapolis area.
Fred also is a fine sailor, having made offshore passages in Buster in
the Atlantic and Pacific Oceans, as well as being crew with us in the 2003 Great Chesapeake Bay Schooner Race.
Christy Rodman
Christy participated in
the 2002 Great Chesapeake Bay Schooner Race with
us, and sailed offshore to Turks & Caicos with us as the first leg of her around the
world voyage, which is being documented as it happens on her website. Christy kept a much
better log of the voyage than I did, and it's well worth your while to visit. A first
class sailor!
Chris Martin
Chris sailed with us from St. Thomas to Beaufort on the voyage home in
2005. A world class proffesional schoonerman, he crewed on the Pride of
Baltimore II and America among other vessels for several years. He
currently is mate on the ferry running from Key West to Dry Tortugas.
Incidentally, he is an old friend of Charly's son Stewart, and they were Boy
Scouts together. Chris is the best crew I have ever had, jumping to and doing
whatever is needed whenever it is needed!
Mike & Nancy Kaufman
I've known Mike since the day I arrived in Annapolis in Bluenose back
in 1975. I went straight to his yacht design office looking for employment. (He sent me to
the boatbuilder downstairs). Mike is a world class Naval Architect well known to the
yachting community and may be visited at http://www.kaufmandesign.com/expert2.htm.
Since we joined Eastport Yacht Club, we got to know Nancy, a beautiful and vivacious
lady who has the patience to spend long hours tutoring kids with learning problems.
Bruce and Gwenda Roberts
Bruce needs no introduction to the yachting world. Visit his website at http://www.bruceroberts.com. We co-sponsored Bruce
& Gwenda as members of the Eastport Yacht Club. Gwenda is a first class and very smart
woman, and is the brains of Bruce's interiors. We've enjoyed many hours partying with them
at the club.
Bruce and Gweda have since moved to Ireland, and we miss them greatly!
Candy & Larry MacDuff
We met Candy And Larry of Turus in Boqueron Puerto Rico after
we had come over from Luperon, Dominican Republic. Many hours of snorkeling, beachcombing
and partying ensued through St. Thomas where they had to turn around and go back to the
States.
Candy loves to spend hours with a fishing pole in her hands and sing to the fishes!
Candy and Larry are managing a marina/restaurant in Key Largo Florida last I heard.
Mike & Frankie Montieth
We pulled into Royal Island in the Bahamas in 2003 and Mike rowed out to us. Turns out
he was president of the Great Chesapeake Bay
Schooner Race for some years, and was naturally attracted to our schooner. With Rob
and Holly (below) we sailed together through Eleuthera and the Exumas, gorging on conch
and lobster.
We all got together back in the states on several occasions and resumed our partying
with much gusto. We hope to sail again in tandem in the fall of 2005 back south.
Rob Sanger & Holly Carter

Part of the "Bahamas Gang" with Mike & Frankie, Rob & Holly sail on Hampshire
Rose.
Robb is a first class chef of conch, and we all gained weight while down there! He
taught me all I don't want to know about cleaning conch (slimy!).
Holly took the picture on the front page of this site. A barrel of fun and the reigning
"Conch Fritter Queen"!
Scott Rogers
We first met Scott at the Nassau Bahamas Yacht Club, when he
arrived to help us sail back to the Chesapeake. He was recommended by Holly
Carter, who always finds the good 'uns, and is a fine crew and a consummate
musician.
Scott has since bought and lives aboard his own schooner Shanty
and has sailed in the last two schooner races.
Scott was a great help to me in making the new boom before
our 2005 trip to the Bahamas. I couldn't have done it without him!
Don & Olga Casey
Don and Olga have been
sailing their Allied Seawind Richard Corey around Florida and
The Bahamas for thirty years or so, and have been doing the Caribbean in 2003/4. Don is
well known to yachtsmen for his series of how-to books and his regular monthly column in
Sail magazine.
Olga is all class, speaks Spanish like a native, because she is one, hailing from Cuba
before the revolution.
The Casey's were the unofficial commodores of the "Q Flag Fleet"
yachts tagging along together humping down to Grenada for the hurricane season. (DUH!)
Famille Massenet
Jean-Yves, Frederique, Aleena, Chloe, Anaëlle, Mitz, Marie and Shiny are from
Montreal, and sailed on a 45 foot MacIntosh steel cutter Yoko.
Very French, very funny and the girls are very beautiful and take after their mother! They
made the world's most special birthday cards for Charly.
Also part of the Luperon crowd, we met in Boqueron P.R. just before Christmas 2003, and
sailed together as far as Grenada. They escaped the wrath of Ivan and have since moved off
the boat and back to snow country.
Yoko's quite a boat and is for sale! Send a note if
interested.
Steve, Lyn & Katie
Steve,
Lyn & Katie are sailing aboard Melika.
We met them "on the hard" in Trinidad and became fast friends. Steve
is English, and Lyn is Australian.

Katie is a real charmer, and we enjoyed watching her grow up from a little
over a year old to over 18 months.
Al Roper
Al came aboard with us in Norfolk Virginia after the 2005
Great Chesapeake Bay Schooner Race for our voyage to and within The
Bahamas. Al is a well-known ample-bodied seaman character among the schooner
race crowd, known for his wit and talents.
A physician by profession, he gave it up some years ago when the HMO's
tried to tell him how to practice medicine. Al has crewed the Merritt Walter
schooner Bonny Rover for many years. A real boat whore who will go to
sea on sail or power as long as the captain is willing to put up with him.
A singer of sea chanteys (poorly, but with great enthusiasm), a teller of
tales, and a poet extraordinaire, Al has been appointed the official ship's
jester!
